A special thread to show just how much of a good sport many royals can be.

First up, Queen Marie of Romania getting "crowned" (by the head purser, no less!) with the SS Leviathan life-preserver in 1926. (grin) (grin)

I warn you, this thread might be Queen Marie-intensive, because she had that quintessential British sense of humour that allowed her to be royal to her fingertips, but she also knew when to lighten up and be SILLY. Ironically, many foreign royals think this compromises their gravitas, whereas for their subjects, it just makes them more human and likeable.

In a nation of bicyclists, Juliana of the Netherlands was LITERALLY their queen.

Like a good consort, Prince Bernhard rides behind. (grin)

Queen Mother was reputed to be a proficient snooker player. And not just for the cameras.

She might've hired a television set for her summer months at Castle Mey in Scotland, but she made sure she had a billiard table installed from Balmoral!

It seems EVERY film is 3-D these days, so what's a girl to do except put on a pair of 3-D glasses and enjoy Clash of the Titans?

The Queen has had to eat the most unimaginably disgusting things ever served up to a foreign guest, from rattlesnake in Africa to bitter melons in Fiji, all the while wearing a gracious and interested expression (and trying not to regurgitate...).

:life:

Mind you, it doesn't always please the royal palate. (grin)

Meanwhile, whilst his mother eats, her son and heir dances. (grin)

Brazil seems to bring out the twinkle-toes in Prince Charles. Here he is dancing the samba with Piná, the famous black model who later parlayed this quick dance with a British prince into a singing career at the Folies Bergères!

Years later, back in Brazil again, he's still at it.

His Duchess has had to take ballroom dance lessons just to keep up!

The crowd at the British Empire Exhibition can almost REACH OUT AND TOUCH their Majesties!

Incidentally, this was the year the effervescent Queen Marie of Romania went, too. You can't see her, but she's in the caboose. (grin) (grin)

Great thread! Great idea!

Queen Mary at Wimbledon. Sorry I don't know the year.

And here she is, resting between sets.

LOL! In between sets. Awesome pic! :mdr: :yay:

Actually, hey! Come to think of it, tennis was the only sport Queen Mary was known to have practised, so you never know.

To the best of my knowledge, she never rode, though she must've been taught to, don't you think?

I read that having heard as a young girl of her grandmother, Countess Claudine de Rhédey's death by having been trampled underfoot by horses (awful), she was forever after wary of horses.

Edit: "Princess Alexander", oh dear. That escaped the proofreader. And if Princess Alexandra of Kent is only 15 mos old in that photo, having been born on Christmas Day, 1936, that means Queen Mary was still in DEEP mourning for her husband in 1938! You know how much she hated wearing black.

Ahem, and since I'm being observant, that's Suzanne Lenglen curtseying to QM, circa 1919-1925, when the balletic Frenchwoman ruled Wimbledon.
