This is the best thread about Prince William of Gloucester that I have seen. Thanks Nellie and others who have participated (I hope this doesn't sound like I consider the topic exhausted!)

I am already looking forward to other topics and the Tecks sound a great idea!

One of the last pictures of Prince William.

I have to agree with you Octavius... as a complete newbie... I now feel like I know a little bit about this almost forgotten royal... and I have to ask for recent pictures of his brother and his family... is there? do they fit in this thread, since he is the only kin that has survived prince william?

I have found this picture of Barnwell Manor on Flickr, and I have also read on the Internet that the house was haunted and so was Althorp House, they have their own ghosts.
I don't know if the property is in the hands of the Gloucester family nowadays. I believe Prince Richard lives in Kensington Palace.

June, it was not silly at all...! I think everybody here would have loved a happy end for William and Zsuzui (wink).
Berciana, we can do Prince Richard maybe another day. He is in the news all the time and not so interesting... and... well I think the thread is still alive and kickin'...! Octavius.

A few questions and points to respond to.
The Gloucesters leased out Barnwell Manor in 1995 to live year round at Kensington Palace, where Princess Alice spent her final years.

It was Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, who published her memoirs in 1983.

I do not have any more information about Zsuzui. As far as I know, we have only the segments in the book about the Prince, and reports about Zsuzui in the newspapers at the time of William's death.

In 1945 Prince William of Gloucester, a small book of photographs by Studio Lisa, was published by Lisa Sheridan.

Oh there is still more Prince William to do in this thread about him, as Octavius also hinted at.

Here is an anecdote about Prince William from the memoirs of his mother -

" My other grandmother, Louisa, Duchess of Buccleuch, was also greatly loved and musch respected at Court. She had a host of friends as well as a large family to entertain, something she thoroughly enjoyed. A daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Abercorn, she was the eldest in a family of thirteen, which enabled my father to have two uncles younger than himself. At a lunch party at Barnwell when my son William was about six years old, the conversation turned to the subject of large and small families. I casually remarked that my grandmother was one of thirteen. I saw William looking horrified and when the guests had left he asked me if what I had said was really true. 'Of course,' I replied. 'But how dreadful!' he exclaimed. 'Did they have to drown some?' The labrador had just had a litter of eleven pups, five of which had had to be drowned, doubtless causing him much distress and now some confusion. "

Wonderful anecdote, thank you Nellie.

Barnwell Manor (at least part of it) is an hotel nowadays, where you can stay for 50 pounds a night (less in the winter months, the website says). Children over 10 are welcome but not dogs.

Here is Louisa, grandmother of Princess Alice, with her husband the Duke. Louisa was mistress of the robes for both Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra.

Thank you Octavius for letting us know about staying at Barnwell.
Now June can enjoy a holiday there ! So long as she leaves her dog at home !

Here is Princess Alice relating another story - about sailing to Australia where the Duke was to become Governor General.
Adventure began quite early in Prince William's life.

What a good idea Nellie - will have to give it some consideration. Only problem is we have little time to spare when visiting the UK as there are so many friends and relatives to visit. No problem about doggies - none in my life.

Prince William certainly led an adventurous life, what a shame he died so young. Having said that, however, he certainly packed an awful lot into such a short time-span, and obviously lived life to the full.
