Se ha llegado a un acuerdo sobre la zona de Ihumatao ó Ihumaatao en Auckland, cerca de Wiri. Fue un terreno confiscado a los Maorís en la época de la reina Victoria por su rechazo a la corona inglesa. Hace unos años, el entonces propietario vendió los terrenos a una empresa constructora Fletcher Building. Después de años reclamando los terrenos y solicitando que no se realizaran las obras, el gobierno de Nueva Zelanda ha llegado aun acuerdo, ratificado por el Kiingitanga (movimiento de la monarquía Maorí). Según el acuerdo, el gobierno de Nueva Zelanda ha comprado los terrenos a la empresa propietaria por 29,9 millones de dólares neozelandeses y será una comisión que cuente con el apoyo del Kiingitanga quién decida el desarrollo de dichos terrenos. Se protegerá la cultura y la herencia relacionada con Ihumaatao y también se construirán algunas casas para el Kaumātua (los ancianos maorís).

Why is this important?
Ihumaatao is a rare cultural heritage landscape that marks the arrival of the first Polynesians who settled here 800 years ago.

The waahi tapu (sacred land) now threatened by destruction is part of this landscape and adjoins one of Aotearoa’s most complex archaeological sites - the Otuataua Stonefields Historic Reserve.
In 1863, this land was confiscated because our people refused to pledge allegiance to the English Queen. They were threatened, attacked, robbed and exiled, and sought refuge in Waikato. When they returned, their land had been given to settlers, the Wallace family.

In 2014, the Wallace family agreed to sell the land to Fletcher Building. Auckland Council and the Government also approved this whenua as a Special Housing Area for 480 homes.

But the most affected people, the Ahikaa (the people of the local marae and whanau of Ihumaatao village) were not consulted. So, six cousins from Makaurau Marae, with the blessing of their people, created the SOUL campaign.

For five years the cousins and their supporters have worked hard to stop the development. Since November 2016, kaitiaki have peacefully occupied the land whilst campaigning to #protectihumatao.
On Tuesday 23 July around 100 police, along with Fletcher representatives and others, arrived at Ihumaatao to issue eviction notices.

Since then, thousands of protectors have come from all over Aotearoa and the world to support our struggle to reclaim the whenua.

During the reclamation, we have reached out to the Prime Minister many times, asking her to walk the whenua; to experience, koorero and acknowledge this kaupapa.

Until the Prime Minister experiences this whenua for herself, we won’t feel confident she has a true sense of what’s at stake or will deeply appreciate why this whenua matters so much and to so many of our people.

When Jacinda became Prime Minister, she promised a kinder approach and we believed her. Under her leadership, the Government can right the wrong of the original raupatu (confiscation) by returning the land wrongfully stolen by the Crown. As Minister of Culture and Heritage she also has a duty to protect this rare archaeological taonga and sacred land from desecration.

The Government will buy land at Ihumaatao from Fletcher Building for $29.9 million after all parties committed to having housing on the site.

The deal means Save Our Unique Landscape has dropped the demand it made when it occupied the former farm in July 2019 that it remain as public open space.

Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson says a Memorandum of Understanding, He Pūmautanga, has been signed by the Kiingitanga, the Crown and Auckland Council which sets out how parties will work together to decide the future of the land.

Housing Minister Megan Woods says the land is being purchased under the Land for Housing Programme.

The exact form of housing will be agreed by the signatories to He Pūmautanga and it could include papakainga housing, housing for mana whenua and some public housing.

She says the agreement recognises the need for housing to support kaumātua and kuia of Ihumaatao.

The impact of a decision by Heritage New Zealand to extend the classification of the land will also be taken into account.

Mr Robertson says alongside housing, the parties want to use some of the land to provide better recognition of the cultural and heritage values associated with Ihumātao.

Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson said a steering committee will be formed to make decisions and guide the process on a consensus basis.

Rōpu Whakahaere will include three ahi kaa representatives supported by the Kiingitanga, one representing the Kiingitanga; and Two representing the Crown;

Auckland Council will provide an observer to attending meetings and work with the Rōpu Whakahaere.

Royal Māori rumble: Why King Tūheitia does not get on with his eldest son and shamed his marriage day.

When Māori King Tūheitia Potatau Te Wherowhero VII publicly denounced his son's wedding and stripped Whatumoana Paki of his royal title, he effectively reopened the door to his youngest son, Korotangi, to come back into the family business.

Incensed by Whatumoana's defiance and his marriage to Rangimarie Tahana, King Tūheitia took the unusual step of taking the Te Ariki Tamaroa - High Prince - title from Whatumoana and appointed Korotangi Te Ariki Turuki. Koratangi's new title translates to strive to move forward - meaning Korotangi has an opportunity to prove himself worthy if called upon by the motu to take over the Kingitanga.

The public shaming comes after Whatumoana went against his father's wishes and married Rangimarie Tahana at a ceremony in Taupiri north of Hamilton. Rangimarie was the hāwini (companion) within the Kingitanga and her duties included ensuring the health, welfare and wairua of all members of the King's whānau. Her marriage to Whatumoana, according to sources, clouded that role.

Their marriage was celebrated at a cafe by friends and whānau who support the union. But it also caused tension within the Tainui iwi, with some elders defying the King's position and attending the ceremony and wedding-day celebrations as well.

The source said whānau were between a rock and hard place because while they did not want to openly defy King Tūheitia, Whatumoana and Rangimarie are still whānau.

"His blood is the same as the King, as are his tupuna. You can't fake the boy's whakapapa, and that can't be denied," the source said.

King Tūheitia's spokesman, Archdeacon Ngira Simmonds, said the Kingitanga office would not make any further comments about the June 25 marriage, the King's disapproval or his disparaging statement.

The statement, sent to media just hours after the wedding, says: "This marriage is taking place without the support and blessing of the Kīngitanga. It remains a source of sadness and disappointment at this time."

"We won't be making any further comment on this kaupapa," said Simmonds, who is also King Tūheitia's chief of staff and private secretary, and also one of his closest advisers.

The source said there are also other ongoing issues between King Tūheitia and Whatumoana.

"There is no doubt Whatumoana openly defied his father, but it's not the first time," the source said.

While Tainui hold the Kingitanga mantle, the Māori King or Māori Queen is decided by the motu. Kingi Tūheitia is the seventh successive sovereign to hold the office since the Kingitanga was established in 1858. He was crowned on August 21, 2006, the day after his mother, the much-loved Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, was buried.

"King Tūheitia was chosen after his mum passed because the motu wanted the royal line to go back to the male side," the source said.

"It could go to his daughter Ngawaihonoitepo or son Korotangi or a cousin who is starting to make a name for himself, but that is up to the motu.

"The Kingitanga will carry on, but if Whatumoana continues to openly defy his father, then the motu could step in."

The Kingitanga has an advisory team of 12 who support and advise the King.

El rey maorí Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherohero VII, quien durante 18 años fue soberano de las tribus indígenas de Nueva Zelanda, murió "en paz" este viernes, a la edad de 69 años y días después de someterse a una cirugía.

El soberano maorí, que ocupa un cargo simbólico, "se recuperaba de una cirugía al corazón, tan solo unos días después de celebrar el décimo octavo aniversario de su coronación", publicó 'Te Tari o te Kiingitanga', el movimiento que representa desde 1858 a varias tribus maoríes neozelandesas, en sus redes sociales.

"La muerte de Tuheitia es un momento de gran tristeza para los seguidores de 'te Kiingitanga', el pueblo maorí y la nación entera", remarcó el comunicado al referirse a este soberano, visto como una figura que unificó de los indígenas del país oceánico.

Entre lanzas, tatuajes y faldas tribales, los maoríes, descendientes de los indígenas neozelandeses, han coronado a su nueva reina: Nga Wai Hono i te po Paki, tercera hija del difunto rey Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII, fallecido la semana pasada a los 69 años tras 18 de reinado. Nga Wai, que tan solo tiene 27 años, se ha convertido en la reina más joven del mundo en una impresionante ceremonia de investidura celebrada en Ngaruawahia, en la Isla Norte de Nueva Zelanda. Ante miles de personas que la aclamaron como el “nuevo amanecer”, la soberana, sentada en un trono de madera tallada, con una corona de flores y un manto, fue ungida con aceites sagrados y bendecida con la biblia utilizada para coronar al primer rey maorí en 1858.
