Camilla: When she was five, Shand was sent to Dumbrells, a co-educational school in Ditchling village.[13] She left Dumbrells at the age of 10 to attend Queen's Gate School in Queen's Gate, South Kensington. Her classmates at Queen's Gate knew her as "Milla"; her fellow pupils included the singer Twinkle (Lynn Ripley), who described her as a girl of "inner strength" exuding "magnetism and confidence".[15] One of the teachers at the school, the writer Penelope Fitzgerald, who taught French, remembered Shand as "bright and lively". Shand left Queen's Gate with one O-level in 1964; her parents did not make her stay long enough for A-levels.[16] Aged 16, she travelled to attend the Mon Fertile finishing school in Tolochenaz, Switzerland.[17] After completing her course in Switzerland, she made her own decision and travelled to France to study French and French literature at the University of London Institute in Paris for six months.
Diana: Diana was initially home-schooled under the supervision of her governess, Gertrude Allen.[21] She began her formal education at Silfield Private School in King's Lynn, Norfolk, and moved to Riddlesworth Hall School, an all-girls boarding school near Thetford, when she was nine.[22] She joined her sisters at West Heath Girls' School in Sevenoaks, Kent, in 1973.[23] She did not perform well academically, failing her O-levels twice. Her outstanding community spirit was recognised with an award from West Heath.[24] She left West Heath when she was sixteen.[25] Her brother Charles recalls her as being quite shy up until that time.[26] She showed a talent for music as an accomplished pianist.[24] She also excelled in swimming and diving, and studied ballet and tap dance.[27]
In 1978, Diana worked for three months as a nanny for Philippa and Jeremy Whitaker in Hampshire.[28] After attending Institut Alpin Videmanette (a finishing school in Rougemont, Switzerland) for one term, and leaving after the Easter term of 1978,[29] Diana returned to London, where she shared her mother's flat with two school friends.[30] In London, she took an advanced cooking course, but seldom cooked for her roommates. She took a series of low-paying jobs; she worked as a dance instructor for youth until a skiing accident caused her to miss three months of work.[31] She then found employment as a playgroup pre-school assistant, did some cleaning work for her sister Sarah and several of her friends, and acted as a hostess at parties. She spent time working as a nanny for the Robertsons, an American family living in London,[32] and worked as a nursery teacher's assistant at the Young England School in Pimlico.[33] In July 1979, her mother bought her a flat at Coleherne Court in Earl's Court as an 18th birthday present.[34] She lived there with three flatmates until 25 February 1981.[35].
Kate: The family moved from Bradfield Southend, Berkshire, to Amman, Jordan, in May 1984, where her father worked for British Airways. Middleton attended an English-language nursery school.[28][29][30][31] When her family returned to Berkshire in September 1986, she was enrolled aged four at St Andrew's School, a private school near Pangbourne in Berkshire. She boarded part-weekly at St Andrew's in her later years.[32] In 1995, the Middletons moved to the village of Bucklebury.[33][34] She studied at Downe House School.[35] She was a boarder at Marlborough College, a co-educational independent boarding school in Wiltshire;[36][37] Middleton showed talent in sports and was captain of the women's field hockey team.[38] While at Marlborough, she underwent an operation on the left side of her head, reportedly to remove a lump.[39] She obtained three A-Levels in 2000, with an 'A' in mathematics, an 'A' in art, and a 'B' in English.[40] Despite being offered a seat at the University of Edinburgh,[41] she took a gap year, studying at the British Institute of Florence in Italy and travelling to Chile to participate in a Raleigh International programme.[42] She worked as a deckhand at the Port of Southampton in the summer preceding university.[43] Middleton subsequently enrolled at University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland, studying history of art. She briefly studied psychology before focusing solely on art history.[44] She worked part-time as a waitress during her studies.[45] While attending university, she achieved a gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.[46] Middleton was an active member of The Lumsden Club, which held fundraisers and community projects each year.[47] In 2005, Middleton graduated from the University of St Andrews with an undergraduate MA (2:1 Hons) in the history of art.[48]
In November 2006, Middleton commenced part-time work for twelve months as an accessory buyer with the clothing chain Jigsaw.[49] In 2007, she curated a photography exhibition to mark the book launch of "Time to Reflect", by Alistair Morrison, to raise funds for UNICEF.[50] In 2008, Middleton made several trips to Naomi's House Hospice, where she brought gifts and read to children.[51][52] Later that year, she organised an '80s-themed roller disco fundraiser which raised £100,000, split between Oxford Children's Hospital, for the construction Tom's Ward to treat pediatric cancer, and Place2Be, an organisation which provides mental health counselling to school children.[53] Middleton also worked until January 2011 at the family business in catalogue design and production, marketing, and photography.[2][54] While working for the company, she launched the firm's junior brand for toddlers, and began working with the Starlight Children's Foundation, which helps terminally ill youth, providing party essentials for sick children.[55] Middleton also helped coordinate the Boodles Boxing Ball, which raised money for the charity
