What is it with English queens near steeds in Deptford.

I know that the Empress Frederick pooh-poohed Queen Mary's maternal skills, because Vicky was potty about kids.

But like you, Nellie, I'll put in a good word for May's mothering anyday.

I wonder about Queen Ena and the fact that we have never heard her speaking Spanish. I also think her French was flawless, and very fluent considering she was not a native. She was Queen of Spain for 24 years. There must be something, somewhere! I know she did not address crowds day in day out, but surely she was interviewed by ABC once in a while- She hosted Red Cross events, she was not closeted behind palace doors, people saw her, anecdotes happened.... I can't believe that interview in Lausanne when she was an old lady was the only one in her lifetime. I would love to hear what she sounded like!

I'm thinking, Serendipity, that if there weren't a newsreel of Queen Ena speaking Spanish sometime in the 30s (because it was a relatively new medium when she was exiled, just 5 years "old") that at least there should be one on her return to Spain in 1969. Remember when she received all those people in Madrid, in a prolonged audience, about which you can hear the Duchess of Alba speaking? There has got to be something in the TVE/ABC archives, somewhere.

Problem is, the non-anglophone cultures are not as quick to put up their historical records, online, as we are.

British Pathé have Queen Mary speaking at the launch of her famous namesake ship, as well as......Mignon of Yugoslavia being interviewed!! More about that, anon. :-p

It's just awesome to be able to put something concrete, like a person's voice, to the static images that however beautiful they are, and they are, are just that. Flat. They can't convey the emotional pull of another human being's voice.

Wishful thinking! When she came back to Madrid in 1969, her one and only visit after she had to go into exile, Franco was in power, and although he attended the christening of Prince Philip (mind you, he was a monarchist at heart!) the official national press had instructions to politely "ignore" the royal visit. Everybody knew she was there after decades of exile, the duchess of Alba was her host and lady in waiting for the duration of the visit, and people were free to line up outside Liria palace and to greet her at the airport but that was about it. Pictures were taken for sure, and we have all seen the newsreels on the event. I think she even met with Franco before leaving, but there was no press coverage as such on the visit. One would think media would kill to be granted an interview like the one in Lausanne, or even a few words during the Liria session, but strangely enough it never happened!. Same thing in Lausanne. She lived there for decades, and unless she specifically refused to speak to Spanish media while she willinglly granted interviews in French, which I doubt, my only conclusion is that she was never asked!. It would have surfaced by now, don't you think so?

I'm sure in the CR they must to have that something. But, as Maravilha said, non-anglophone cultures have not the same approach about monarchy, it's the same about jewels, pictures, archives... in Spain they don't showcase anything.

Ahh, of course. You're right, I had heard that too. She had an inkling from Don Juan (and her own instincts about Spain, which were good) that reaction to her arrival and stay would be muted. That's why she was so surprised at the reception at Barajas airport -- hundreds upon hundreds showed up.

I felt sorry for the Duchess when I saw her otherwise very lively interviews in that documentary. After so many plastic surgeries, if that's what it is, one can barely understand her.

This was the famous meeting between Franco and Queen Ena, so you're right. She told him in Spanish, "General, I am speaking to you as your Queen now. You have 3 possible choices for King of Spain outside. Select whichever one you want, but please do so."

(I know you know, but for the benefit of English-speakers who may possibly not know the story, I repeat this and other details. :D )

Another logical possibility exists that Queen Ena might have been amenable to a Spanish-speaking interview (say, from a South American news outfit out of the thorny reach of the Generalissimo) but that she didn't want any of her words to come back to haunt her, and the monarchic cause.

As you said, Franco was a monarchist, and in fact, a conservative, traditional Galician  but he and his wife were alive to any insult or insinuation from the Royal Family, and only too glad to use it against them, in subtle ways.

After all, the powers-that-be are always touchy about the powers-that-were. It's just human nature. <o>

Maybe! Given the jewels that Storicus finds that I didn't think possibly existed (but there they are, each time), I am just hoping against hope about this matter.

The Tsar, wife, and children all recorded wax cylinders of their voices during the 1913 Romanov Tricentary, to surprise the Empress Maria Feodorovna. She heard them, but during the War, they were stored in her palace and later lost. Where are these voice records? No where! SO FAR.

I live in hope that they'll be found and then the royal forums will explode. (grin) (grin)

P.S.: I don't think that voice recording of the Tsar that is floating around the 'net, is really him. In case you want to hear it, click on the link. He's supposedly the one who thanks his men in review, SPASIBO BRAT', at the very end.

Returning to my favourite topic, Queen Mary, here's another perspective of the famous Ray Ban shot. (grin)

Can you make out the royals, other than George V? I see Ingrid, Crown Princess of Denmark to the right, and George, Marquess of Milford Haven at the back. And of course, King Faisal I of Iraq in between the British monarchs.

More Queen Mary at Wimbledon, at the 1933 Men's Doubles Final won by Borotra and Brugnon, over England's Spence and Tuckey.

This time, she's with King Alfonso! He's smoking (for a change) next to her.

Queen Mary, off-guard. :DD

Don't forget to click on the link. It's the whole video, where you can see the Queen "in action".

Sadly, yes.

Do you think that's Princess Beatrice, his mother-in-law, behind Lord Athlone (QM's brother)? The nose is the same, but Princess Beatrice was always chubbier. I also think that's Princess Marie Louise next to her, looking bored off her mind, and finally, I want to say "that's Lord Curzon" but perhaps not.

EDIT: Ah! It's Alec Ramsay, Princess Patricia of Connaught's husband. What irony. He's seated near the man who his wife didn't want any part of, and chose a navy commander over a King of Spain!

Not sure who's that fluffy young woman next to King Alfonso. It's certainly not one of his daughters...still, he'd never misbehave in front of Queen Mary. None of us would. (grin)
